After winning the Paper Championship against Union Cane, anti-champion boxer Tommy Gunn had a street fight with his former mentor Rocky Balboa for betrayal. This was caused by George Washington Duke's manipulation of Gunn's mind and goaded him into fighting Rocky in the ring. After a confrontation with Balboa, which resulted in Gunn punching Rocky's brother-in-law Paulie, Rocky agreed to fight how this time it would take outside much to Gunn's pleasure. Rocky was able to defeat Gunn.

Background[]

After the fans and press refused to acknowledge Gunn as a real champion, Duke tried to convince an enraged Gunn to fight a real champion and to do that he needed to beat Balboa. Rocky has since rekindled his relationship with his family, mainly his son.

Rocky and Tommy wrestle outside of the bar

Later that night, Duke and Tommy, along with a small camera crew, went after Rocky in the city, heading to a local bar that Balboa hangs out at and challenging him to fight with Tommy. Duke's scheme went completely wrong when Tommy, in a fit of anger, punched down Rocky's brother-in-law, Paulie Pennino, who began criticizing him for treating Rocky so bad and even betraying him, as he was the one who brought him to victory. Rocky's reaction to this act was to challenge Tommy to try knocking him down now, adding that "his ring's outside.", much to Duke's dismay as he wanted both of them to fight in the official boxing ring.

Tommy Gunn is defeated

A heated street fight triggered between the two former friends. Rocky used his street fight skills to beat Tommy after hearing Mickey Goldmill's guidance and to his nightmares of being heavily attacked by his toughest opponents Drago and Lang. Duke told him during the fight with Rocky "If you lose, you're finished." After the fight, Rocky confronted Duke and the greedy promoter said he'll sue him if he touched him. However, since Rocky was broke, there's nothing to really for the Duke to sue him over so Rocky knocks him unto his car hood and gives him a lesson for stealing his money and losing his fighting career.

Aftermath[]

Despite being the current Heavyweight Champion, the shame of being involved in a street fight with his former trainer would have had a negative impact on his career, and after the fight, Duke dumped Gunn who was picked up by the police. Without Duke's influence or Rocky's coaching, Gunn, already a joke and a paper champion, was not gonna fare to well on his own. His championship, or career for that matter, did not last long afterwards.
